Firstly, many apologies for the late submission of this critique; life for me is normally a rollercoaster but recently a few big dippers, not to mention some swings and roundabouts, have been added to the mix. Many thanks for the wonderful hospitality, before, during and especially after, and a special thank you from my wife for the surprise bouquet of flowers. What a wonderful compliment to be asked to judge a Club show, especially in a breed in which you are not an active participant. My love of the breed is well documented, and as such, when I last judged I expressed certain reservations about the direction it was headed. Thankfully, on today’s evidence, those fears were well and truly allayed and the emergence of some outstanding youngsters, of both sexes, bodes well for the future. The weather maintained a steady heat factor over the weekend; indeed one or two may have preferred a cooler environment, but the sunshine added to the general ambience of the proceedings and there was definitely a ‘garden party’ atmosphere during the whole event. A 40th birthday party added that little something extra to the occasion, pity you didn’t invite me as I have great experience of these celebrations! As I said, the quality was much improved, certainly less variation in heads, much less of the ‘other breed’ characteristics I have encountered previously. No doubt some of this is down to a greater trend in undershot mouths, far too many for my liking, especially in bitches, but it has certainly added breadth to many under jaws. It’s up to the breeders to ensure that this doesn’t get out of hand, moderation is the keyword. When you have to go looking for the top teeth, then perhaps things have gone a little too far. Fronts in this noble breed have never really been a big problem, depth of chest though is a different matter. Many specimens looked to have sufficient depth when viewed laterally, but on front inspection many left a lot to be desired. A number of saggy toplines put paid to some for higher placings but movement was not of great concern. Overall the breed, certainly compared to many others I can think of, is in a reasonably good state and breeders are to be congratulated on their devotion to breed type. Finally I’m aware of the debate on size, but must confess I wasn’t over concerned on this issue, size is relative and balance and type are the watchwords.

A promising red baby of 7 mths, pleasing balance and shape for age. Head developing nicely and has pleasing angles and topline. Moved well, if a little tentatively, just needing a little more confidence.

2nd Garmondsway Watchman Another 7 mths youngster who has much to admire in terms of type, shape and balance. These two will, I’m sure, change places many times.

1st Sundabish Luka DCC & BIS

only 12 ½ months. An outstanding fawn dog, all male, massive frame but so well balanced. Pleasing headpiece, strong neck, excellent angles fore & aft, good depth of chest for his age. All round today I felt he was the complete package. Moves with controlled ease, and in profile has a great balance of reach and drive. To top it all off, he has an excellent temperament and disposition. Pleased to award him the CC and Best in Show.

2nd Serirnos Lord of the Titans Another just out of puppy, red with a lovely head and expression. Good balance throughout, and clear precise rear movement. Just needs to tighten up a little in front action. width="51%">
